Online Dating Safety
Only you can judge the pace you wish to go. But online dating
has a few
best practices that will help things progress
smoothly... Here's a suggested path to that important first date
with someone new.
First contact
Most frequently initial contact will be when you notice a new message in your
email inbox, or you send a message to someone. Either way it's usually best
to keep your first messages short - don't write your life story.
In fact, at the beginning
less can be more.
Leave something of a mystery to hopefully intrigue and entice! But by the
same token don't be too brief, and leave the other person wondering
if you have anything worthwhile to say about yourself. For the guys,
avoid dumb one-liners, or jokey bar-room chat up lines.
Getting an email message is not the only method of making first contact
with a potential partner. Other sites may have an instant messenger service
specifically for its members. You may get a message popping up with someone
introducing themselves or you may send a message to another, knowing they are
online!
Most good dating sites have chat rooms for group discussions about different topics.
So this is another forum to meet online. Other sites have flirtation devices, such
as the ability to send an electronic smile, wink or wave: An invitation for you to
drop a line.
The general wisdom is to avoid negativity and avoid sounding like a
victim. Keep things positive. Play on your personal strengths and
enthusiasm, and share a
little something personal about yourself. Demonstrate
you have a sense of humor, and don't just say you have a
GSOH.
Read the person's profile carefully before you send a message. If you know you are not
what that person is looking for, then don't waste your time contacting them.
They are not interested for a reason. Plus, if you
haven't read someone's profile how can they be sure you're genuinely
interested in them? Too many people complain that their profiles were not
read. This shouldn't be happening.
Bare in mind you may not get a reply to you email immediately. Real life
stuff can slow us all down. You'll be surprised how correspondence goes.
Sometimes things will just fizzle out, and other times you'll just click with someone.
