All the good sites offer online chat services to their members, but often you pay by the minute or a premium to use them. Later you can always switch over to one of the free Messenger programs out there. Use an IM account you especially set up for this type of thing. Safety should be paramount, so don't give out your IM account name you use with your close friends.

The Telephone
If you have established a good rapport, and now have some idea of whom you are talking to, then you can swap phone numbers. There's nothing like chatting on the phone! But if you're still a little nervous, then the best IM programs also offer voice over IP. You can talk to each other though an instant messenger program. It's not as good sound quality as the regular phone, and often there is a time lag between what you say and the other person hearing it. But at least you can get to hear each other without giving out your phone number!

Web cams
And lastly there are web cams. So you can chat and see each other in real time! Don't forget to look smart.

Meeting
If all goes well and you both feel good about it, then you can arrange to meet in person. Remember there are safety guidelines you should follow when meeting someone for the first time. (see First Date Advice). Who knows? Maybe that first date will mean flying to a far off wonderful and exotic place for a romantic weekend?
